Mini-splits show up in three honest jobs around here: a garage shop, a closed-in porch that became a room, or a house whose ducts are a science experiment.
What they do well
Zoned comfort. You heat or cool the room you are in. Humidity control on a head that actually runs long enough. No duct leakage into a 130° attic. A well-placed head in a bonus room beats dumping 3 tons through a 6-inch run that was never there.
What they are not
They are not a stealth replacement for a failed 4-ton package unit with a closed-off wing. One head in the living room will not fix three bedrooms with no air. Multiple heads and a branch box is a real design, not a sale.
What we need
Which rooms, how they are used, and whether you are keeping the old ducts for anything. Nameplate photos of what is there now. We size heads off load, not off “the internet said 12k for 400 square feet.”
Filters on the heads are still your job — more often than a 4-inch media cabinet, because they are small and they sit in the room.
