Ice on the insulated copper near the house, or a white outdoor cabinet in July, means the coil got below freezing while it was trying to cool. That is not a personality trait of the brand.
The two common stories
Airflow. Filter packed, return blocked, blower not moving enough air, vents shut in the rooms you live in. The coil gets too cold, condensate freezes, capacity falls, you feel warm air. This is the one homeowners can actually help: replace the filter, open vents, thaw.
Refrigerant or metering. Clean filter, good airflow, outdoor running, still ice. That is a licensed problem. Adding refrigerant through a hardware-store can is how you turn a leak into a flooded compressor.
Thaw without making it worse
- Thermostat to Off.
- Fan On if the indoor blower still moves air.
- Wait until the ice is gone. Often an hour or two. Do not chip the coil.
- New filter if the old one failed the light test.
- Cool back on. If it ices again the same day, leave it off and book.
A light frost on a heat pump outdoor unit in winter can be defrost. That is different. If you are not sure, Skip that question in the Toolbox instead of guessing.
