Air conditioners make water. In Cumberland County they make a lot of it. That water is supposed to leave through a drain, not through the living-room ceiling.
What you are seeing
Standing water at the indoor unit, a pan that is full, a new brown ring on the drywall under an attic air handler — those are the same story. Many systems have a float switch that opens the cooling circuit when the pan rises. The house gets warm. That is the switch doing the only useful thing it can.
What not to do
Do not tape the float so Cool will come back. Do not pour random chemicals into a trap you cannot see. Do not keep running it “one more night” under a stain.
What you can do
If you can see the indoor unit from the floor (closet, garage), look. If it is in an attic and you are not comfortable on that hatch, skip it and tell us. Move stuff out from under a drip. We will snake or vacuum a drain on a visit. Recurring clogs are a trap or a slope or algae — that gets written down, not guessed.
A wet pan plus no cooling is often this, not a compressor. That is why the Toolbox asks about water before it talks about refrigerant.
